Sprockets and segments for bulldozers and mining machines

At RTD Mining, sprockets and segments are supplied that are suitable for different mining machines such as bulldozers. The sprockets and segments are suitable for a full series of machines ranging from 0.8 to 100 tonnes.

The sprockets and segments are first cast or forged. Next, they are machined when they are also given a special heat treatment. If there are insufficient quantities of carbon in the steel, it will become brittle during the tempering process. If this is the case, only the surface will be tempered and therefore the sprocket or segment will start to wear earlier. If the material becomes brittle, it can break. The teeth of the sprockets and segments are therefore tempered through induction hardening. They are post machined, tempered under special conditions and forged with precision.

Sprockets and segments are also known as gears in the sector. They can be found in-between the links of the track of the excavator or bulldozer. This undercarriage part can also be found over the bushing that connects the two links of a track to each other. The sprocket is only used to drive the track and is installed around the drive of the machine. The sprocket therefore does not carry any weight of the machine.

Difference between sprockets and segments
Although they look very similar, there are a few differences between sprockets and segments. Segments also consist of a metal internal ring with bolt holes and a gear ring as do sprockets. The segments can be replaced without disassembling the track. This is possible because the segment is built up from separate segments that together form the gear of the bulldozer undercarriage.
A sprocket is a metal gear that consists of an integral gear ring and a metal internal ring with a push-on boss or bolt holes. The sprocket can be pressed onto the boss of the machine drive, but sometimes the chassis section can be screwed on directly. Sprockets are mainly used in excavators that are, for example, used in mining.
