Bucyrus in the mining industry

Bucyrus International is a producer of excavators and was established in 1880 by Daniel P. Eelis and a few of his family members and business partners. The machines that Bucyrus made were, in the first instance, mainly delivered to railway companies to lay the railway tracks. The first steam excavator was delivered to the American railway organisation Northern Pacific Railroad.

Later on, the company was expanded and they started to produce more machines mainly for mining. In 1969, the largest dragline excavator of the world was made by Bucyrus. It was given the name The Big Muskie. This machine was built by the Muskingun coal mine in East Ohio.
However, Bucyrus was taken over by the American Caterpillar in 2011. Since then, the name Bucyrus is no longer used. Instead, all machines have been given the name Caterpillar.
